Department of Rog Nidan Avum Vikriti Vigyan

The Department of Roga Nidana and Vikriti Vigyana is a fundamental department of Ayurveda that focuses on the systematic understanding, identification, and assessment of diseases. The department follows the classical Ayurvedic principles of diagnosis, including Nidana (etiological factors), Purvarupa (prodromal features), Rupa (signs and symptoms), Upashaya-Anupashaya (therapeutic assessment), and Samprapti (pathogenesis), along with appropriate clinical evaluation of the patient.

             The Department is committed to integrating the classical diagnostic principles of Ayurveda with contemporary concepts of clinical diagnosis and pathology. It aims to provide students and research scholars with comprehensive, scientific, practical, and patient-centered training in the field of disease diagnosis and pathological understanding.

Government Ayurveda College and Hospital, Varanasi, located in the historic city of Varanasi, provides a rich academic environment rooted in India’s cultural and Ayurvedic heritage. The Department of Roga Nidana & Vikriti Vigyana actively contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical training, and research, with emphasis on systematic disease diagnosis, pathophysiology, and interpretation of clinical and laboratory investigations. The Department has benefited from the association of distinguished teachers and alumni, including Prof. Aditya Nath Tiwari (CBPACS, Delhi), Prof. Shipra Agrawal (Government Ayurveda College, Pilibhit), and  Dr. D. N. Singh (Government Ayurveda College, Handia). Their contributions form an important part of the department’s academic legacy and strengthen its continued commitment to the advancement of Ayurveda.

        The Department of Roga Nidana & Vikriti Vigyana has been dedicatedly led by Prof. (Dr.) Avadhesh Kumar, whose academic vision, dedicated service, and dynamic leadership have made a significant contribution to the growth and development of the department. He served the Department from   19 June 2013 to 3 August 2013 and has been serving again as the Head of the Department from  13 June 2018 to the present. Under his able guidance, the department continues to progress in the fields of teaching, clinical training, research, and academic development, upholding the values and excellence of Ayurvedic education and practice.

        The department places strong emphasis on practical and integrated diagnostic training, bridging classical Ayurvedic principles with contemporary clinical investigations. Students are trained in the interpretation and clinical application of laboratory investigations, X-rays, ECGs, and ultrasonography (USG). Through hands-on learning and clinical exposure, they develop the skills to correlate investigation findings with clinical presentation and Ayurvedic diagnostic concepts.

        This integrated approach enhances students’ diagnostic reasoning and prepares them to make informed, systematic, and patient-centred clinical assessments, strengthening their understanding of both Ayurvedic and modern diagnostic methodologies.

• 1. To impart education and practical training to Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate students in the principles and practice of Roga Nidana and Vikriti Vigyana.

  2. To develop understanding of Ayurvedic diagnostic principles including Nidana, Purvarupa, Rupa, Upashaya-Anupashaya and Samprapti.

  3. To train students and scholars in systematic clinical examinations and assessment of patients.

  4. To facilitate understanding and appropriate interpretation of relevant laboratory, pathological and other diagnostic investigations.

  5. To assist Post-Graduate scholars in identification, documentation and scientific evaluation of disease processes for academic and research work.

  6. To promote scientific research while maintaining the fundamental principles and originality of Ayurveda.

The Department may conduct lectures, practical demonstrations, clinical case discussions, seminars, journal clubs, tutorials, research-related academic activities and other activities as per the academic schedule and institutional requirements.
